NPPF Scholarships

The National Press Photographers Foundation is accepting applications for NPPF 2012 scholarships. We will be awarding $14,000 - seven $2000 scholarships. Deadline is March 1.  Applicants must be enrolled in an accredited four year program in the U.S. There are scholarships for both graduates and undergrads. The application process is now 100% online and follows the same procedures as NPPA’s Best of Photojournalism. Please go to www.nppf.org for instructions and information. The National Press Photographers Foundation Inc, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, is charged with advancing press photography through education and awarding scholarships and fellowships to deserving individuals who have demonstrated ability or promise in the field of photojournalism.

Penn Camera Exchange Inc., with eight retail stores in the Washington DC metropolitan area, and fixture since 1953, regretfully announced on Wednesday January 4th 2012 that it has filed for bankruptcy protection under Chapter 11 of the United States Bankruptcy Code. Five locations will be closed immediately and we will hold a special clearance sale at our E Street, Rockville and Tysons locations.

A dramatic decline in sales performance during the preceding holiday period has precipitated this action.

It has been an honor and a privilege to serve the photographic needs of this community for nearly sixty years. We extend our deepest gratitude to our many employees and wish for them a smooth transition.

WHNPA Contest Judging - Feb 24-26th

Judging will be held at National Geographic the weekend of February 24-26, 2012. There will be presentations by some of the judges at the general membership meeting on Friday night, Feb. 24, 2012. Judging is open to the public, so please spread the word and bring a friend and your students, if you teach. More info will be posted about the contest judges after the entry deadlines have passed.

Annapolis Maritime Museum presents Tidewater: The Chesapeake Bay in
Photographs, an exhibition by Stephen Brown, opening January 27 

Washington, D.C., photographer Stephen R. Brown will exhibit images from his new book, Tidewater: The Chesapeake Bay in Photographs, at the Annapolis Maritime Museum. The exhibit will open with a reception on Friday, January 27, 2012, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. and will run through the month of February. Admission to the reception is free. The Museum is open Thursday through Sunday, noon to 4 p.m. Admission to the Museum is also free, though donations are gratefully accepted.

Stephen R. Brown has been a professional photographer and writer based in Washington, D.C., for the past 35 years. His images and articles on photography have appeared in Smithsonian, Life, Newsweek, Time, Fortune, The New York Times, National Geographic books, Broadcasting & Cable, American Photo, Photo Techniques, and other publications. His photographs have been exhibited in solo shows throughout the world. Most notably, they were featured in “Indelible Images: 100 Years of War Photography” and “Odyssey: 100 Years of NGS Photography, both of which were initiated at the Corcoran Gallery of Art and traveled around the world.

Brown has taught photography, digital imaging and related software for American Photo Magazine, the Maine Photographic Workshops and as an Assistant Professor at American University in Washington, D.C. A member of the White House News Photographers Association, Brown has in recent years produced three books: WWII Memorial: Jewel of the Mall, DC Photo Book: An Insider’s View of Washington, D.C. and Tidewater: The Chesapeake Bay in Photographs.

Brown will deliver an illustrated talk on his work as part of the Museum’s Winter Maritime Lecture Series on Thursday, January 26, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. There will be an admission for the lecture. For more information, call 410-295-0104 or click onto www.amaritime.org <http://www.amaritime.org/> .
