Happy New Year! Hope this finds each of you rested and ready for 2008! It’s going to be a busy year.

Urgent reminders

The Eyes of History contest deadlines are looming! All rules and guidelines can be found on the WHNPA web site. Please follow all instructions carefully!

The entry deadline for the stills contest is January 10, 2008, at 6:30 p.m.

The deadline for the New Media Contest is: January 10, 2008, at 11:59 p.m. This is the brand new contest for the year so please read the rules listed on the web site carefully before you enter. A direct link to the information can be found at: http://whnpa.org/mediacontest

Both contests will be judged at National Geographic the weekend of January 19 and 20, 2008. They are both open to the public.

Friday night, Jan. 18, 2008, there will be a general membership meeting featuring special guest speakers! Please plan to attend and bring a friend; tell your students, if you are teaching this year.

The television contest deadline is January 25, 2008, and judging will be at National Geographic Studios the weekend of Feb., 9 and 10, 2008. Volunteers are needed to help with the weekend¹s logistics, so please call Pege Gilgannon at 202.345.1937, if you can help.

The Student contest is moving along. Preliminary information has been posted — check the web site in a few weeks for more information and a downloadable flyer for you to help promote the event. The entry deadline is March 1, 2008 at 11:59 pm and judging will take place on March 15 at American University.

Thanks to each of you who have renewed your membership. The strength of the association depends on your dedication and commitment. Your 2008 car cards and renewal stickers will be mailed shortly. If you would like to renew online, use the paypal option to charge your membership, or send in a check with your dues. Take care of this soon — your membership must be up-to-date if you plan to participate in the upcoming contests.

Congratulations to Matthew Cavanaugh on the birth of his son, Jonah Thomas Cavanaugh on Dec. 20 and to my own 11-year-old son, Kyle (whom most of you know) who has just been named his school¹s recipient of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Leadership Award.
