International Awards Competition, New Partnerships, Grants Update, and Mayor’s Arts Awards
 
  • International Awards Competition - The deadline is quickly approaching! Please submit your work by September 17, 2012 at 11:59 pm PST. An extended deadline of September 23, 2012 at 11:59 pm PST is available for last minute submissions.         
  • Our New Partner and Sponsor - We are excited to announce a new partnership with DC’s premier Realtor, TTR Soethby’s International Reality.
  • Grants update - FotoDC is grateful to have been awarded an Arts Works grant through the National Endowment for the Arts. We would also like to recognize the following foundations for their ongoing support of our nonprofit organization: DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities, The Morris and Gwendolyn Cafritz Foundation, Philip Graham Fund, The Open Society Foundation, The ASMP Foundation, and the Nancy Peery Marriott Foundation.

Opening this week at the International Center of Photography in New York City - Rise and Fall of Apartheid: Photography and the Bureaucracy of Everyday Life. Explore over 60 years in photographs, films, books, and assorted archival documents that examine the apartheid system in South Africa. This exhibition makes a connection between the understanding of photography, and the power of the documentary form.

Gregg Segal’s latest work will be shown at George Mason University’s Mason Hall atrium Gallery until October 1st. 
State of the Union
 is a juxtaposition of two contrastive eras: an idealized Civil War embodied by period re-enactors vs. the commercialism of contemporary life. The portraits in the series were taken on the actual sites of specific battles in Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Tennessee.

Parks and Passages: Inspirations from Berlin for Washington’s Dupont Underground will be opening this Thursday, September 13, 2012 at the Goethe-Institute Washington FotoGalerie. The exhibit is an investigation of relics, ruins and reconstruction in the capital cities of Berlin and Washington, DC.

Once Upon A Time in Almeria will be shown at the Embassy of Spain from September 13th to November 18th. The exhibition is of photographs by Mark Parascandoladocumenting a forgotten legacy of movie making in the desert landscapes of Almería, Spain.

Joshua Yospyn, a freelancer still photographer with WJLA.com, has been working on a book project satirizing American patriotism in a delicately lighthearted, yet unabashed way, which is a collection from assignments, travels, and medium format film portraiture.  Click on “American Patriotism” for a preview. 

Martin Middlebrook’s latest work is a unique perpective of Afghanistan. His photographs give life to inanimate objects and define a culture without putting a face to it. Check out Afghanistan Abstraction and his other work on his website.
