WHITE HOUSE NEWS PHOTOGRAPHERS ASSOCIATION WELCOMES NEW STILL PHOTOGRAPHY POLICY FOR LIVE PRESIDENTIAL ADDRESSES

(WASHINGTON, D.C. – June 1, 2011) - The White House News Photographers Association (WHNPA) welcomes the new policy worked out between the White House Correspondents Association (WHCA) Stills Representative, and WHNPA member, Doug Mills, and the White House Press Office that allows still photographers access to live, televised Presidential Addresses.

In addition to recognizing Doug for all of his hard work, the White House News Photographers Association wants to thank the White House Press Office, especially Principal Deputy White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest, for being open to working with photographers to make the new guidelines possible. The WHNPA also thanks White House photographers Pete Souza and Chuck Kennedy for demonstrating that shooting a live, televised Presidential Address is possible with certain technical approaches.

Ron Sachs, President of the White House News Photographers Association, said, “Although the WHNPA prefers access to these events for as many photographers as possible, we understand this is not possible given the constraints and considerations of a live, televised Presidential Address and having a pool press photographer record these historical events is better than no photographer at all.”

The White House News Photographers Association is a 90-year-old non-profit organization dedicated to supporting the efforts of Washington’s professional photojournalists. The WHNPA aims to provide professional and educational outreach to its members and the community through scholarships, programming, an annual competition and a celebration of the industry at the annual “Eyes of History™” gala.

The WHNPA and “The Eyes of History™” are sponsored in part by Nikon, Tiffen/Domke, PNY, and United Airlines.
