FEMALE CIRCUMCISION IN KURDISTAN
A midwife slices part of Sheelan Anwar Omer’s, 7, clitoris while performing a circumcision in Tuz Khurmatu, Iraq, on Aug. 25, 2008. Omer is held by her mother and a local woman. Maharoub Juwad Nawchas, the 40-year-old midwife, also delivered Omer and is a trusted and valued member of the neighborhood. Female circumcision is a rite of passage for most girls in Kurdistan. It is meant to “cleanse” them of improper or sexual thoughts and actions.
